First roll!

So why film?
It’s start in June, after a family meal.
the topic of the day was

“Let’s have a family trip next month”
I usually don’t input anything just let them pick a place and go with them.
Yep, I’m that kind of guy in a group who just tag along.
A few day pass with a few phone call after that and it evolve into

“Lock your date we are going 16th-18th July”

To lock the date I have to lobby all other co-worker and put in my vacation for approved. then the place is revealed.

it’s Chaiyaphum

Why?
I don’t know I didn’t ask.
but the convenient answer for everyone is probably “P’Jung and Cullan.”

After all of that settle, the flash of inspiration hit me, I needed to take a photo in this trip, last time when we took family trip to Chiangmai, I didn’t take enough photos.

Then the first problem arises, apart from my mobile phone which is NOT an iPhone and has subpar camera. I do not own a camera Yeah, this is easy to solve.

Let’s buy one!
#

/me open a famous camera shop website. After scrolling around for a few minutes, now I have another 2 problems

  1. the one I want is out of my budget
  2. the one I want is also out of stock

So I nope out of there as quickly as I can.

Let’s see the used market then.
#

NOPE, still too expensive, cheapest Ricoh GRIII I could find is like 41,000THB++ (~ 1,112USD), not to mention the famous Fuji X100 which untouchable.

As I’m about to give up and shoot everything with my 3 years old phone, the omnipotent algorithm realizes I’ve been snoop around for camera without buying one. The algorithm recognizes that and says

“Why not check out…real film…camera?”

It sent me a listing of Minolta SR505 bundle with 2 lens, 50mm f1.7 and 100-200mm zooms. The camera comes with original leather case and straps, the whole package, the price?
3,600THB (100usd)

The camera listing in question

I ask myself Why not? After debating with myself for 2 days, I pressed buy.

The reality then hit me, like the second impact. I don’t know how to shoot manual, let’s alone film.

So, I do the sensible thing anyone would do. I Binged YouTube.
No, seriously, I watched so much YouTube and probably give myself a 48 hours crash course on YouTube. LOL

next step is to buy a roll of film
" I’ll just get one! “

NOPE I end up with 10 rolls! 10 rolls!!

Time to put those crash course in practice here are the result, as you can see, I still don’t have a good grasp on focusing yet. Kinda blurry

Next set of frame are from around where I stay. The sky is unfortunate, it’s rainy season after all.

My tea pet. Mirror locked up after taking this. I’ve to perform emergency repair with film still in camera, it’s come to my attention later that the SR series are notorious for their mirrors lock. Ignorant is truly a bliss, luckily it turns out fine after a bit of tinker.

From this point it kinda is a photo walk of sort from where I stay to the King Rama IX Park. Along the way I pick up a cup from @cranecoffeeroaster
Probably best coffee in walking distance from my place.

When I arrived at King Rama IX Park my first intention was to dump the rest of the roll around Chinese garden inside the park. However, as my luck would have it. Chinese garden was closed for maintenance. Chinese garden closed Since Chinese garden is closed, let’s wandering around then

Paddle boat AKA “Ducky boat” Series. I messed up focusing on this one, but I like it due to its dreamy vibe. Continue with “Ducky boat” series This one give me 90s vibe, something nostalgic. Last one in “Ducky boat” series. There’s saying that you’ve reach peak loneliness if you can paddle the ducky boat alone by yourself. I beg to differ, peak loneliness is when you sit alone on the shore, Laufey in your ears, and watch them couples go round and around. One of the park’s signature shot, I guess. Again, grey sky is unfortunate. Siam tulip, Hidden lily. Completely unexpected find. This shot was low on ground, so focus was done with guesstimation and the help of some framing from my phone camera. Another signature shot, probably the best shot on this roll. Definitely portfolio shot.

That’s conclude the first roll.

Lastly, a gallery for your uninterrupted viewing, these were pull from the one on another SNS.
